What this tool does

When people in a group or on a trip have each paid different amounts up front, enter each person's name and what they paid, and this split-the-bill calculator shows the total, the average per person and a settlement list of who should send how much to whom. Use it when payments are scattered, say one person paid for dinner and another for taxis, to settle everything in a few transfers. Amounts are in Korean won.

How it is calculated

First everyone's payments are added for the total, which is divided by the number of people for the average. Anyone who paid less than the average becomes a payer, and anyone who paid more becomes a receiver. Each group is sorted by the size of its difference, then the largest payer is matched with the largest receiver and the smaller of the two amounts is settled as one transfer; when one side reaches zero, the next person steps in. This needs at most 'people − 1' transfers. Differences under 0.5 won count as settled, and amounts are shown rounded to the won. For example, A 120,000, B 0, C 30,000 and D 50,000 give a total of 200,000 and an average of 50,000; settlement is 'B → A 50,000' and 'C → A 20,000', just two transfers. D paid exactly the average and has nothing to send or receive.

  • Delete or edit the three sample rows shown at first and enter real names and amounts
  • Add rows with 'add person' if there are more people, and remove unwanted rows with ✕
  • Type amounts as plain numbers; commas are added automatically. Leave 0 or blank for someone who paid nothing
  • Press calculate to see the total and the per-person average
  • The settlement list shows one line per transfer: 'payer → receiver amount'

Things to know

  • Rows without a name are left out. If someone with an amount is missing from the result, check the name field.
  • If everyone already paid the average, a message says it is already split fairly and no transfers are listed.
  • When the average does not divide evenly, rounding to the won can leave a few won over; finish by having someone send the few extra won.
  • The calculator splits equally. If someone did not drink, work out the drinks separately with a different set of people and combine the results.
  • Post a screenshot of the result in the group chat so nobody's memory of who sent what drifts later.
  • Refreshing the page clears your entries and brings back the three sample rows.

Frequently asked questions

Does the bill splitter minimise the number of transfers?

It pairs the largest differences first, so it needs at most 'people − 1' transfers. That is usually plenty few, but it does not guarantee the mathematical minimum in every case.

Why does one person have to pay several people?

A large difference can cover one receiver's share and still have some left, so it is paired with the next receiver. The totals are the same, so it is fair whoever you pay.

Can people pay different shares?

It only splits equally. For different shares, divide the bill into items with different participants, calculate each, and add the results.

Are the names and amounts saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Closing or refreshing the page clears it.
